Even RMoney calls what Akin said "inexcusable".

Be careful what you wish for. McCaskill ran expensive ads emphasizing Aiken's "conservatism" (really a mixture of reaction and ignorance) in the hope that he would be the nominee. That was based on a calculus that he would be the weakest Republican. So, if Aiken steps aside, his replacement is likely to make it a tougher road for McCaskill. I realize that there are other considerations, but...
As we can see from the Republican platform, Akin is in the mainstream of the party.
