Remember Iraq? That's the country we invaded in 2003.
For a variety of reasons the main stream media no longer posts stories from Iraq on its front pages. Whatever anecdotal stuff is published is usually shoved back to Section B.
Since we haven't had much reporting to keep us up to date on Iraq you might be interested in reading the article associated with this link. It's five computer screens in length, but thorough and revealing. Even if it's found to be exaggerated too much by half it is eye opening, not to mention disturbing.
The article is a condensation of Michael Schwartz's work, "War Without End".
Colin Powell reportedly once told Bush, "You break it, you own it".
Well, clearly we broke it, but if we're owners we're acting like slum lords, unwilling to make what we own habitable for Iraqis.
Our occupying forces of course live on comfortable oases.
Now it seems we're threatening to shut down everything we run and manage if Maliki doesn't sign off on the treaty which justifies our continued presence in Iraq for three more years. It's being called blackmail, which seems to be an accurate label. This is not a threat to leave the country, but a threat to stay, withdraw to the oasis bunkers and watch while all Hell breaks loose.
This is what our government has done, is doing and will continue to do if McCain is elected.
It's hard to be a proud American these days.
