Whom to Salute

Having watched Obama addressing the Marines at Camp Lejeune and talking with Jim Lehrer on The News Hour I'm moved to say that I can salute our president again, not because he's in a position of power for four or eight years, but because he is exhibiting true leadership qualities, those based on demonstrating, rather than just proclaiming, that he is an authority, not based and relying on a position of power, but based on the power that comes from being respected as an authority.

The difference between what we as citizens are observing now and what we observed for the past eight years is extraordinary in its contrasts.

The desire to lead which Obama exhibits, compared to the desire to rule which Bush exhibited, egged on by his personal Machiavelli, Dick Cheney, has nowhere been made more obvious, palpable and clear than in watching the several addresses Obama has made to us, the people, in contrast to what we as a people were subjected to and remember the embarrassment we felt when Bush tried to convince all peoples on earth that, simply because he was President of the United States, represented and spoke for us, the citizens of the United States.

We should shout out a loud cheer to those around the world who were patient and knew all along that Bush was a puppet of the far right neocons whose agenda was all about finding ways and places to make war, because that's what could make them enormousely weatlthy. The claim that they are, at heart, utopians, is pure bull shit, and has been put out there in the media to provide them moral cover which they don't deserve, and in fact is at least as specious as their propaganda that what they advocate is good for eveyone.

I'm always prepared to salute one who demonstrates, not just declares, that he/she is an authority, not just because he/she happens, for a time, to be in a position of authority.
