How does one reconcile acknowlegement of the fact of being of a species, but often wanting to distance oneself from that species?

I've heard it said that had we known the extent of the horror in the Nazi camps we might have done something sooner. But you've exposed how much we know right now about the horror in Darfur.
But we went after oil in Iraq instead.
